Description

The Lemosho route which is longer than others allowing climbers to acclimatize properly to the altitude is the most preferred one among climbers.

The Lemosho route 7 days is a very scenic hiking route, starting on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro before merging with the Machame Route halfway through. It leads you through the lush rainforest, past the eerie forest, and up to the Barranco Wall. The altitude profile of the Lemosho Route is ideal for acclimatization, allowing climbers to hike to higher altitudes during the day than they’ll be sleeping overnight.

Itinerary

  • After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, your guide will provide a briefing for the day.
  • You will then embark on a two-hour drive from Arusha (1400m) to the Londorossi Park Gate (2100m).
  • In the nearby village, you can purchase mineral water and collect a packed lunch from your hotel. The final 45 minutes of the journey will be on a bumpy forest track that requires 4WD vehicles.
  • At the entrance gate, your guide and porters will distribute supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).
  • You are now ready to begin your three-hour hike into the rainforest. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys! Along the way, you will stop for an afternoon lunch break and arrive at Mti Mkubwa Campsite (2750m) in the late afternoon.
  • The porters will set up your tent and boil water for drinking and washing before preparing a snack and dinner for you. Due to the chilly mountain temperatures that can drop as low as freezing at night, it's essential to be prepared!
  • Hiking time: 3 hours
  • Habitat: Montane forest

  • After fueling up with a hearty breakfast, you'll embark on a six-and-a-half-hour trek that takes you out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland zone.
  • Along the way, you'll cross numerous streams and traverse a plateau that leads to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). The camp is nestled next to a stream and boasts breathtaking views of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the east.
  • As usual, your tents will be set up before your arrival, and the porters will provide drinking and washing water for your convenience.
  • In the evening, you'll enjoy snacks followed by a delicious dinner prepared by our chef.
  • Remember to pack warm clothing as temperatures can drop below freezing at this exposed campsite.
  • Hiking time: 3 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

  • After an early morning meal, you'll bid farewell to the moorland and transition into a semi-desert and rocky landscape.
  • Following five hours of trekking to the east, you'll reach the awe-inspiring Lava Tower (4630m).
  • Here, a packed lunch will be served, and if the weather permits, you'll have the option to scale the massive Lava Tower.
  • It's important to note that many hikers may begin to experience symptoms of altitude sickness at this point, such as headaches and shortness of breath.
  • After lunch, you'll descend from Lava Tower (4630m) to the Barranco Campsite (3950m).
  • This descent of 680 meters provides a significant advantage, allowing your body to acclimatize to the high-altitude conditions.
  • The hike to camp takes approximately two hours and places you in a valley beneath the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, also known as the "Breakfast Wall."
  • As you admire the sunset, drinking and washing water will be provided, followed by a satisfying dinner.
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

  • Today's hike is primarily focused on acclimatization, and it's a relatively short one, lasting around four to five hours.
  • After an early morning breakfast, you'll face the daunting Great Barranco Wall, which may seem intimidating at first glance.
  • However, many hikers report that this Class 2 hike is easier than they anticipated.
  • At the top of the wall, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Heim Glacier and will be above the clouds.
  • The trail then winds its way up and down through the Karanga Valley.
  • You'll spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m) and enjoy dinner and washing at the site.
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

  • Following an early morning breakfast, you'll begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the path used to descend during the final two days.
  • After an hour of hiking, you'll reach Barafu Hut (4550m), which is the last water stop for the porters as there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4600m).
  • The name "Barafu" in Swahili means "ice," and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Due to the harsh winds and rocky terrain, it's crucial for hikers to become familiar with the campsite before nightfall.
  • An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit that same night.
  • Your guide will provide a detailed briefing on how to prepare for summit night. It's essential to be in bed by 19:00!
  • Hiking time: 2-3 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

  • Your guide will wake you around 23:30 and serve you tea and biscuits to prepare for your summit attempt.
  • You'll then begin your ascent, heading northwest over stone scree. This part of the climb is considered the most mentally and physically challenging. After approximately 6 hours of hiking, you'll reach Stella Point (5685m), which is located on the crater rim.
  • Here, you'll enjoy the stunning sunrise before continuing your ascent for another 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m).
  • Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment! You'll be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and enjoying tea before beginning your descent to Barafu Camp.
  • This hike takes about 3 hours. At camp, you'll rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun.
  • After eating, you'll continue descending to Mweka Hut (3100m).
  • The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rainforest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is in the upper rainforest, so fog and rain should be expected. You'll have dinner, wash, and rest soundly at camp.
  • Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
  • Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

  • After a hearty breakfast, your staff will organize a festive celebration filled with dancing and singing.
  • This is where you'll present tips to your guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. Following the celebration, you'll descend for approximately 3 hours to Mweka Gate.
  • The national park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reach Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates, and hikers who reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
  • After receiving the certificates, you'll descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometers).
  • From there, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Hiking time: 3 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
  • Habitat: Forest
