Description

The Rongai Route, which starts from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, is unique in several ways. Firstly, it is the only trail that begins from the northern part of the mountain, although some claim that it starts on the "Kenyan side" of Kilimanjaro, it is entirely within the borders of Tanzania. Secondly, because of its remote location, the Rongai Route receives less traffic than other routes and offers trekkers a relatively unspoiled wilderness experience where they can see large wildlife like antelope, elephants, and buffalo. Thirdly, the north-east side of the mountain gets significantly less moisture than the southern slopes, making it less likely for trekkers to encounter rain and more likely to get clear views of the mountain. However, because of its profile, the Rongai Route is flatter than other routes but does not offer trekkers good options to climb high and sleep low. The Rongai Route can be hiked on a six, seven, or eight-day route, . The summit night from Kibo Hut follows the same path taken by Marangu trekkers and passes Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak before descending via the Marangu trail.
