Built on a promontory of the El Mokattam hills near the center of Cairo, the Citadel offers a strategic position, commanding a breathtaking view over the city and dominating its skyline. FAQs

  • The Great Pyramid is a colossal pyramid located in Giza, Egypt. It is the largest pyramid ever built and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Originally standing at a height of 481 feet (146.6 meters), it has slightly diminished in size over time due to the loss of its top portion.
  • For an impressive span of 3,800 years after its construction, the Great Pyramid held the distinction of being the tallest man-made structure on Earth. The pyramid has a square base measuring approximately 750 feet (230 meters) on each side.
  • The construction material primarily used for the Great Pyramid consists of large stone blocks, predominantly limestone, which were quarried from the nearby area. It is estimated that the pyramid comprises between 1,260,000 and 2,300,000 individual stones, with a total weight of about 6,000,000 tons (12 billion pounds or over 5 billion kilograms). Some of the individual stones within the pyramid are believed to weigh between 30,000 and 160,000 pounds (13,000 - 73,000 kilograms).
  • The Great Pyramid is an enduring testament to the incredible engineering and architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians. It continues to fascinate and awe visitors from around the world, serving as a remarkable historical and cultural landmark.

  • There are several theories about how they could cut these stones and move them into position, but it is still not clear exactly how this was done.
  • It is believed that the stones were cut in the quarry using quite time-consuming methods, such as pounding the rock with dolerite, a type of rock that is extremely hard. They might also have drilled into the rock or sawed in the rock using an abrasive (something that would rub or scrape on the rock), such as quartz sand.
  • Once these extremely heavy stones were cut in the quarry, some believe they were placed onto wooden sleds. Then mud was placed on the ground and the sleds were pulled over the mud. Others believe that the stones were moved by placing them first on wooden rollers.
  • After the stones reached the pyramid it is believed that they were pulled by a crew of men up a ramp to their individual place in the structure. Some believe there was a long, straight ramp perpendicular to the pyramid. Others believe that there was a spiral ramp, which was built around the pyramid and was extended higher as the pyramid was built.
  • There are also those who believe that there is an internal ramp which is enclosed in the pyramid and the stones were hauled up through the pyramid and then placed into position.

  • The pride of ancient Alexandria was the great lighthouse, the Pharos of Alexandria, which stood on the eastern tip of the island of Pharos. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the lighthouse is reputed to have been more than 350 feet (110 meters) high and was still standing in the 12th century.
