All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside. • After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up and driven to the Machame Village. In the village, you can purchase mineral water and will receive a packed lunch. From the village, depending on the road conditions, you will continue driving to the Machame gate, but if not, you will walk the 3 km distance, which takes approximately 1 hour.
  • After registering at the gate office, you will begin your ascent and immediately enter the rainforest.
  • The trail can be quite muddy and slippery due to the possibility of rain in the forest.
  • You will have a lunch stop about halfway through the hike. You are expected to arrive at the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. Your porters will have already set up your tent by the time you arrive.
  • In the evening, the porters will boil drinking and washing water, and the cook will prepare dinner for you to enjoy before retiring to your tent for the night.
  • Night temperatures at this campsite can drop to freezing point.
  • Hiking time: 7 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 18 kilometers
  • Habitat: Montane forest

  • After an early breakfast at Machame Camp, you'll begin your ascent and climb for approximately 1 hour through the forest. After that, you'll continue for another 2 hours at a more relaxed pace as you traverse the moorland zone.
  • Take a short lunch break and rest before continuing your journey up a rocky ridge that leads onto the Shira Plateau.
  • From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the stunning glaciers of the Western Breach in the east. You'll then hike for a short distance before reaching Shira Camp at an altitude of 3,840 meters.
  • Your porters will boil drinking and washing water before serving dinner.
  • The night at this exposed camp is particularly chilly, with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

  • On day four, you'll set out from Barranco Camp and tackle the impressive Barranco Wall. Though it may appear daunting at first, the climb is typically easier than anticipated.
  • After reaching the top, you'll continue along the route, passing through valleys and ridges before joining the Mweka trail.
  • This is the preferred descent route, so be sure to remember it.
  • From there, you'll head up a ridge and reach Barafu Camp, which is located at an altitude of 4,550 meters. This camp is called Barafu, which means "ice" in Swahili, and it's a barren and uninviting area to spend the night.
  • The tents are pitched on a narrow and dangerous ridge that's exposed to strong winds. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents.
  • The summit is still another 1,345 meters away, and you'll make your final ascent during the same night. Be sure to prepare your equipment, including your ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt.
  • Replace your headlamp and camera batteries and carry a spare set as well. To prevent freezing, carry your water in a thermal flask.
  • Try to get some rest and sleep around 7 PM.
  • Hiking time: 7hrs
  • Distance: Approximately 13 km
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

  • You'll wake around 11:30 PM and enjoy some tea and biscuits before embarking on the most challenging part of the climb.
  • You'll head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point, which is located on the crater rim at an altitude of 5,685 meters. This six-hour walk can be mentally and physically challenging for many climbers.
  • At Stella Point, you'll take a short break and witness a magnificent sunrise (weather permitting).
  • From Stella Point, it's a two-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, which is located at an altitude of 5,895 meters.
  • The time you spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions, but it's essential not to stay for too long due to cold and fatigue.
  • After enjoying the accomplishment of reaching the summit, you'll head back to Barafu Camp, which takes about three hours.
  • Here, you'll have a short rest and collect your belongings before descending the rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest. The camp is situated in the upper forest, and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.
  • Dinner and washing water will be prepared for you.
  • Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
  • Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent, 23 kilometers descent
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

  • You'll have a hearty breakfast before your team celebrates your accomplishment with dancing and singing.
  • This is where you'll present tips to your guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. After the celebration, you'll descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate.
  • At the gate, the national park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion.
  • Hikers who reach Stella Point (5,685 meters) receive green certificates, and hikers who reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) receive gold certificates. After receiving your certificate, you'll descend into the Mweka village for an hour (3 kilometers).
